On July 6 to 21, 17 selected students from Confucius Institute at Vilnius University and affiliated education centers attended a two-week summer camp themed by “Chinese Dream &Liaoning University Impression” in China. Since these students had studied some Chinese language and were infatuated with Chinese culture, they were eager to come to China and see it themselves. By a lucky coincidence, the summer camp provided them with such an opportunity.

When arrived in Beijing, they first visited Confucius Institute Headquarters/Hanban and presented a friendship tree made up of chrysophoron to Hanban to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Confucius Institute. During the following three days, the students visited not only the ancient heritages such as the Great Wall, Temple of Heaven, the Imperial Palace, the Summer Palace and South Luogu Lane but also some modern architecture like majestic Tiananmen Square and Bird's Nest. In addition, they watched Beijing Opera and tasted Roast Duck, experiencing real Chinese culture and Beijing’s flavor.

In Shenyang, Liaoning University offered them special Chinese classes. Each day, they got to know new parts of Chinese culture. Colorful cultural experience such as learning Beijing Opera, tea art, calligraphy and Chinese painting were accompanied by several cultural tours like visiting Expo Park, Provincial Museum, Imperial Art Academy and Citizen Culture Square, etc. With great curiosity and motivation, the students took immense pains to absorb various knowledge.

When the camp drew to a close, some international students and Chinese students of Liaoning University got together to hold a party. Especially, students from Lithuania sang a song “Auld Lang Syne” in Chinese to express their love for Chinese and their friendship with teachers and friends there, which deeply impressed the camp students.

The Mid-Autumn festival was being celebrated at the VU Confucius institute on September 8th. During the celebration the traditions of the festival were presented and the guests were welcomed to taste various snacks and, most importantly, the traditional Mid-Autumn festival snack - the mooncakes.

We are really glad that this festival gathered so many people and we invite you to remember the highlights of the celebration !

September 27th, Saturday, was the day when a celebration dedicated to the founding of Confucius institute worldwide – international Confucius institute day - was held at Vilnius M. Daukša middle school. The celebration also included the opening of Confucius class in M. Daukša middle school.

The first Confucius institute was found ten years ago, in 2004, Seul. There already are 443 active Confucius institutes in the world. Vilnius Confucius institute was found almost 4 years ago.

The celebration was held on Saturday, September 27th, at Vilnius M. Daukša middle school. Many people gathered to celebrate this event, among them – Vilnius City Mayor Artūras Zuokas, vice-minister Ministry of Education and Science Rimantas Vaitkus, the acting rector of the Vilnius University Jūras Banys, PRC ambassador in Lithuania J.E. Liu Zengwen, Liaoning University pro-rector prof. Xu Ping and other respectable guests.

The event started with acknowlegments to the important guests for their support and collaboration at launching the VU Confucius institute and also for their support for chinese culture spread in Lithuania. After that, the opening of Confucius class in M. Daukša school was celebrated – VU Confucius institute directors prof. Audrius Beinorius and prof. Zhang Donghui signed the agreement with M. Daukša school director R. Mikalauskienė. Later, the acting rector of the Vilnius University Jūras Banys, Vilnius City Mayor Artūras Zuokas and ambassador Liu Zengwen attended ribbon cutting ceremony concerning this opening. M. Daukša school students, already learning at the Confucius class, prepared a thank-you performance for the guests.

The famous ceramics master from China Jackson Li also visited the celebration – due to the VU Confucius institute initiated project „Meno gairės. Baltija – Kinija 2014“, which is located at the Vilnius Academy of Arts, the master was visiting Lithuania. Moreover, with the help of cultural intiative group „Kvadratas“, the ceramics workshop was organized at the celebration. The guests also could take a look at the ceramic works made at the art project workshop in Vilnius Academy of Arts.

VU Confucius institute and M. Daukša middle school have already been collaborating for a couple of years. The school, with the help of VU CI, provides chinese language, culture and art classes, organizes events related to the chinese culture. A volunteer teacher from China is going to teach the students. Hereby, an interest to the chinese culture will be efectively spread among young students and they will have a great opportunity to get known to China and its culture.

On  November 17, 2014 , Prof. Shang Quanyu, the Chinese Director of  CI at Riga University, visited  CI at  Vilnius University (VU), along with Dong Fang, the Chinese language teacher representitive. They were warmly welcomed by the Chinese Director, Prof. Zhang Donghui, and the project manager Vilma at the institute of CI at VU. The two parties exchanged ideas around some issues such as the Chinese language teaching, cultural activities and further cooperations after they visited the library, Chinese classrooms and audio room at CI of VU.  The following day, guests also visted the well-known library of Vilnius University and its old campus.

November 28th was the day for the final event of Vilnius University Confucius Institute organized „Chinese Culture Week“. The last time when Peking opera was performed in Lithuania was 15 years ago, therefore this year Peking opera performance received much attention. This time the guests were three young, yet already well-known performers from China. Yang Yang, Huang Xinyang and Liu Zhen, also accompanied by the opera art expert Xu Zhaoqun. Earlier in the week the guests also performed at Vytautas Magnus University and Lithuania Sports University in Kaunas, and also at Vilniaus M. Daukša school, where the Confucius class was opened couple of months ago.

The event at Vilnius University consisted not only of Peking opera performances – we also had guests from Lithuanian University of Educational Sciences – the piano master Liu Jintao and his wife, soprano soloist Men Xue from China. This duet prepared a really stunning performance.

Peking opera is quite unusual to listen and watch for a regular lithuanian, and itself is not too similar to the Western opera style. Therefore, when performers appeared in their vividly painted faces and colourful costumes, the audience was stunned.

We are very glad and honoured that so many guests arrived at the performance. We hope that events like this will encourage more and more people to develope their interest in Chinese culture.

The Opening of the Project  „Meno gairės. Baltija-Kinija“ Exhibition / 13th October

To mark the final stage of the project „Meno gairės. Baltija-Kinija“, an exhibition dedicated for the works made especially for and during the course of the project was opened at „Akademija" gallery in Pilies str. 44. The sponsors of this project were Confucius Institute at Vilnius University, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Lithuania and academic partners – Lithuanian, Latvian and Estonian art academies, Baltic States‘universities and embassies of the People's Republic of China in the Baltic States.

One of them was Chinese artist Li Jianshen (李见深)  - master of ceramic arts. He completed MFA degrees at Jingdezhen Ceramic Institute and Alfred University. He is a member of the International Academy of Ceramics (IAC) and the founder of China Sanbao Ceramic Working Village which is one of the bigest ceramic arts centre in China.  Such a varied eduction left strong impact to his works –traditional Chinese and modern arts are greatly intertwined in his works.

Arist Sui Mu (隋牟)  - is well known traditional Chinese painting artist whose interpretations of traditional art are greatly praised. Motives of confucian, daoism and buddhism traditions as well as flowers and mountings take a big part of his works. One of the most common themes in his art – images of intellectual women. He also tries to leave space in his works - so common in traditional Chinese art - which lets the observer himself to imagine and finish the piece. His works were displayed in various art exhibitions around the world.

In addition to these famous artists mentioned above, the younger generation artist‘s Chen Xingxing (陈星星) works were also shown in the exhibition, which were inspired by the stay in Lithuania. A meeting with China's National Peking Opera (Jingju) Troupe and its director Sun Guiyuan was held at the National Philharmonic Hall in Vilnius on the 2nd of June. It was a rare occasion to attend a Peking Opera workshop, which can be reffered to as the essence or the gem of the vast Chinese culture. The National Peking Opera Troupe is one of the most famous in China and the director Sun Guiyuan is one of the most distinguished; therefore tickets to their performances are rather pricey and are sold out very fast even in China.

During the workshop, Peking Opera was introduced by the director himself and the producer of the international channel of the China Central Television (CCTV) and a Peking Opera expert Xu Zhaoqun. The meeting was carried out in Mandarin and English, and translated to Lithuanian for the audience. Sui Guiyuan introduced Jingju's orchestra, makeup, roles, costumes, performances and Jingju's arbitrary setting; i.e. a performer walking in cricle can symbolise a trip from Beijing to Vilnius. Guests also had the chance to observe how performers put the makeup and costumes on, which is a rare sight even in China.
The workshop finished with a fight scene in which the performers pretended to fight in a complete darkness. The thrilling scene with a touch of humour was followed by applauses from the audience. During the workshop the audience not only received a lot of information that helped them to better understand the Peking Opera on Thursday, but they also had the chance to experience the close up of some exciting performances.
